Are grains essential in human diet?

This is another topic which is widely discussed amongst the fitness and good health enthusiasts and professionals.

There is a lot of buzz about Paleo way of eating and there can be few slightly different versions of Paleo way of eating found online.

If you haven’t yet heard of Paleo way of eating then in short it could be described as hunter-gatherer way of eating – whatever can be found, gathered, harvested, hunted in the wild is good to eat. So your staples would be lean meats, seafood, fish, vegetables, leafy green vegetables, fruits, berries, nuts, seeds.

The variations between different versions of Paleo I’ve mentioned above come when dairy and grains come into picture. Some authors would argue that dairy and grains have no place in the healthy way of eating as these foods were not consumed by the hunter-gatherers.

Yes, that’s true as the agriculture started only about 10,000 years ago and as humans we’ve been evolving for nearly 2 million years. So the Paleo way of eating would seem to be more natural way of feeding rather than relying so heavily on the products made from grains and especially wheat. Although our ancestors might have found some grains growing in the wild and might have used them in cooking however the modern wheat and the products produced from it, especially bread is so much different. Wheat is grown on mass, scientists have produced hybrid forms of wheat with higher protein content so that these grains can cope better with the harsh milling methods, there are so many additional ingredients in the modern bakery products which you wouldn’t have found in the traditional and artisan bakery products.

However I do enjoy a slice or two of sourdough bread each week made from the stone-ground wholemeal flour and baked in a traditional/artisan way where the dough is allowed to prove, rise and develop the full flavour and the powerful anti-nutrients found in the wheat, like phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors, tannins, complex sugars and gluten are partially neutralized and broken-down.

I also think that eating small amounts of wholegrain rice will not do any harm to our health.
